This Tropical Getaway may Take Faster to Reach Than Your Office.

The Berry Islands, Bahamas have it all – crystal water, sandy beaches, excellent fishing, adventurous thrills and a bit of luxury.

Flights from Fort Lauderdale International Airport will now take you to either end of the Berries – Chub Cay and Great Harbour Cay, in less than an hour. That is probably faster than commuting to work.

Tropic Air Charters, Makers Air, Aztech Airways and Island Air Charters all offer flights to Great Harbour Cay and Chub Cay, Berry Islands, Bahamas.

Chub Cay

Unlike the more popular Exumas, or the Abacos, you will not have to wrestle with mega yachts over a great spot in the anchorage, or a stretch of clean sand ashore.

At Chub Cay Marina, the blue-green sea pairs quite well with the large pool, for the best of both worlds. Order pizza at the pool bar – it is worth it.

If relaxing at Chub Cay, you must stay at one of their Villas, Cabanas, or exquisite rooms and suites.

If chartering a boat, or sailing your own, the hops between the small islands are easy day trips. Enjoy a breakfast and a swim, hop back aboard and meet the sunset at the next island over.

We spent two amazing weeks cruising the Berry Islands and we would have been there longer, had we not started sailing the Bahamas a bit late in the season.

If hoping for a great catch, Chub Cay is your spot. Fishing charters will take you right into the Tongue of the Ocean, if you dare.

If you prefer to explore more secluded fishing sites, Little Harbour Cay is great for lobsters and conch. Remember, fresh cilantro and fresh lime in the conch salad – make it right.

Check your fishing and lobster license and remember to check for females with eggs, those are not up for grabs.

Don’t feel like cooking? I don’t blame you – it is a pretty slimy ordeal, cleaning conch.

Head over to Flo’s Conch Bar (you might just bump into a celebrity, or two). While still at Little Harbour Cay, take a paddleboard ride around the well-protected anchorage – it is beautiful.

calm blue-green water

Dreaming of blue-green water, while the kids need thrills? Head to Hoffman’s Cay and its super cool Blue Hole. It will not disappoint!

Feel free to try the jump, or take the short path around the rocks and watch the rest of the gang dive. That is the spot for the best photos, by the way.

And, no, there are no sharks in the blue hole. No monsters either. It is quite refreshing and fun. Good luck with that “One last jump, guys.”

The beach at Hoffman’s Cay is perfect for families with kids as well. A large shallow area makes splashing around safe for everyone.

Put on a snorkel and find beautiful conch shells. The beach is covered with fine sand, perfect for sandcastles and running around barefoot.

Missing civilization already? Probably not, but you shouldn’t miss Great Harbour Cay either.

At the north side of the Berry Islands, find a little bit of local color, great views and delicious food, at Great Harbour Cay.

Charter flights from Great Harbour Cay will take you right back to the busy Fort Lauderdale, USA.

The small town is fun to explore, with the occasional rooster greeting newcomers (it is really a warning to keep away, but we need not be bothered with details).

Great Harbour Cay town

Shark Creek’s mangroves are a must to explore by kayak. If you are lucky to be lost four times, like we were, it can turn into an entire adventure of mangrove, fishes and turtles.

While there, stop by Great Harbour Marina. The marina staff are quite welcoming and will direct you to explore the town further. Walk down the peer and chat with the boaters, we are a pretty laid-back bunch.

Bring over chocolates and wine, of course.

Getting away from your rushed schedule can take shorter than your daily commute to it.

See you there.
