Luperon the Locals’ Way. Guide to Luperon.

If you find yourself in Luperon, you are either a sailor, or lost. Either way – you will need to do laundry, eat and sleep. Here is our guide to Luperon.

We sailed to Luperon, from the Bahamas, in order to wait out the hurricane season there. It was a one-of-a-kind experience. We adore this town.

How to do laundry in Luperon

Our laundry soaking up the sun on Main St.

“I am sorry, your food down, bad, please washer?”

She looked at me like I was asking her to put me in the washer, and with my beginner Spanish I might have said just that, who knows!

Ever since I managed to sell our old solar panels to the Haitian guy, explaining in perfect French that we have new a horse in our castle, I am not shy to practice new languages!

Senora Lidia is the woman to go to for laundry, in Luperon.

My tiny washer aboard could only do so much, and we had month-old sheets covered in salt, gross! So, with some writing and gesticulations, I managed to show her I was sorry for interrupting her family’s lunch, and we agreed on the price for both washing and drying!

At the time, she charged by gaze – one of those and your bag is sized and weighed. Don’t even think you can stuff it full, and she won’t notice! We paid around $8 for a medium (7-8kg) bag.

Our laundry would be ready the following day… oh, a minor detail, there was no dryer in the house!

The following day, after going to town for some groceries, we walked back down one of the main streets in town, and guess whose laundry was gently drying in the breeze?!

Now most of Luperon knows what color underwear we have.

Never mind the underwear parade, the following day our clothes were neatly folded, beautifully smelling and clean! Just in time for the afternoon dinghy ride back to our boat, against the choppy waves…

Where to buy groceries in Luperon

A street in the town of Luperon

There are quite a few small grocery shops scattered throughout the town. They are quite easy to find and prices are more, or less similar.

To buy meat at a grocery store, you might have to ask personally, because it is not displayed. They usually keep in frozen in the back.

We have bought groceries at all of the grocery shops along the two main roads, and everything has been great, so I would not recommend one over another.

Where to buy fruits and vegetables in Luperon

There is a fruits and veggies truck that used to arrive at the marina three times per week, but the days may have changed. Check this local Facebook group about the latest schedule:

In the meantime, fruits and vegetables are at many tiny shops along the streets and at good prices. The truck mostly carries vegetables, so we preferred the little places in town.

Where to buy good cheese in Luperon

After the long Easter fast, the boys were more than ready for cheese and meat.

We absolutely loved the different varieties of cheese and prices at:

Fábrica de Quesos Rottis – a small dairy farm right outside of Luperon.

The cheese shop is a neat small building along the road, outside of town, around 1/2 mile after you exit under the large sign for Luperon.

Unfortunately, they did not allow us to tour the cheese factory, due to Covid restrictions, but they helped us select the right kind of cheese for baking, frying or melting. And all that in English, for us ignorant tourists.

Where to buy great meat, in Luperon

You get what you get!

As you continue down the road, passed the cheese farm, still going away from Luperon, on the left side of the road, is where one of the local butchers is. Easy to miss.

After we bought cheese, a few non vegetarian boaters headed to the meat shop!

We passed by a couple of small houses, a small shop, a couple of flies-covered benches and another small shop, but there was no sign of the butcher’s!

Finally, we asked one of the locals and he pointed us back, we had passed it… it was, yep, you guessed it, the place covered in flies! A couple boat moms decided to not even try, but a couple of others were curious.

As soon as we stopped beside the flies, a guy came out smiling and waving! Before we told him why we were there, he turned around and disappeared behind a door in the yard. A couple of minutes later, he returned with two huge carcasses, took out a hatchet and started chopping off pieces of each.

Flies, blood drops and tiny pieces of meat and bone flew into the air, “How much do you want?”

My broken Spanish went into action again! Thankfully, cows moo the same way in English and Spanish and I already knew pigs didn’t oink (seriously, people, “oink, oink”?!), so I used my Bulgarian pig sound.

We figured out we were being offered pork and beef. Dare to buy and try?!

I bought almost three pounds of beef and some pork. The meat itself was cold to the touch, so he must be keeping it in a fridge somewhere, and the color was excellent.

Growing up in Bulgaria, we always slaughtered our own heifers, pigs, lambs and chickens, so I had seen what fresh meet should look like. Sure, some flies may have added to the protein, but I was planning to wash it anyway.

That night, after a slow roast in the oven, we ate all three pounds of veal/beef and it brought back memories – excellent meat, no smell or aftertaste of chemicals nor antibiotics!

Where to eat pizza in Luperon

a pizza at Luperon restaurant

The pizza place to be, in Luperon, is D’ La FRANCE PIZZAS, right off of Ave. Duarte. If you take the road from the dinghy dock, then take the right road, at the fork and keep going. The pizza restaurant will be on your right.

Below is a link to the location.

We loved the pizza there, it was a full house when we visited and the pizzas were large and delicious. They serve other food as well.

Where to buy ice-cream in Luperon

At the pink ice cream shop in town – HELADERÍA LUPERÓN.

You cannot pass by it, it is right at the fork, and very pink. I am putting a link below, to Google maps showing its location:

While there, do try the rum and raisins flavor, it is the best I have tasted. Unfortunately, I did not take any photos when we visited, and I prefer not to use stock images.

Where to eat out in Luperon

Las Velas restaurant and marina, Luperon

There are many restaurants to pick from, in the town of Luperon. They are also quite affordable. We loved the pizza place, a fish restaurant in town (a bit expensive for Luperon), but mostly cooked abaord.

But our favorite was the restaurant at the marina – Las Velas Restaurant, Hotel and Marina.

And while you dine, you can also do your laundry ($3 per kg at the time), take a shower ($1 per shower) and use the Wifi. All this, while enjoying good food, great view and plenty of space for kids to run around.

We also stayed at the hotel there, for a night, to keep our luggage ready for the airport transport the following day. It was around $20 for the room.

In conclusion

Luperon is a great place to spend hurricane season, if sailing through. It is a neat town to explore, very different than the typical fancy resorts offered by travel guides. It has preserved its natural, local charm, while catering to the crowd of foreign cruisers.

This makes it a safe and affordable town to visit and stay a bit.
