12 Best-Selling Sea and Sailing Costumes

How about a sailing costume at the next party? Then the neighbors will really take your boating dream seriously.

If you are not going to be dressed up as the ultimate evil – a mosquito, might as well go with something you are passionate about.

Here are a few best-selling costumes to pick from. They are perfect for Halloween, or a nautical theme party, or any occasion.

1. Captain Costume

Morph Boat Captain Costume

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear boat, is captain. Cause we all want to be one – from top to bottom.

It says “for men”, but I think anyone can wear this. In fact, the entire family can be a family of captains, why not!

2. Captain’s Gear

Tigerdoe captain hat and a beard.

If not interested in a full-body costume, opt for the essentials. You can reuse the beard for other parties.

To be perfectly honest a beard while sailing is a terrible idea. Our captain shaved it off as soon as we sailed away.

3. Pirate costume for him

Adult Cutthroat Pirate Costume

Everyone wants to be a pirate. Or at least did at some point.

For those of us, who have sailed out, without sight of the shore, “pirate” really does not sound fun at all.

But, dressing up as a pirate is fun, and will continue to carry that romantic air around it. Besides they are in a ton of adventurous books.

4. Pirate Costume for her

Pirate Queen of The High Seas

If you are going to be a pirate, be a pirate, don’t mix professions. Keep it tasteful and real. My two cents.

We had a real machete aboard… for coconuts.

We had lots of cool tools and gadgets aboard, actually.

Sea Creatures Costumes

Here are a few fun ideas to dress up as a creature of the deep. From sea monster, through mermaid, to the good old lobster.

Be a family of sea creatures at the next costume party, or for Halloween!

The mermaid above is from the crystal waters of the Bahamas.

5. Sea Monster

Womens Dark Sea Siren

I only found cool sea monster costumes for girls, not surprisingly.

Because men aboard do not need a costume – just watch them dock. Truly scary.

6. Neptune

Marine Mythology 101 quiz for you:

Neptune and Poseidon – which one is the Greek, which one the Roman god of the sea? (answer at the end of the post).

While sailing and traveling with teens, everything must be utilized for school, including parties.

I have to say, gods of the sea was the last thing we felt like, while living in the water.

7. Aqua man

Wouldn’t it be so cool to be able to telepathically communicate with sea creatures, like Aqua Man!

Then, we would need a different word for “fishing license”.

Don’t worry, you’d still be able to catch mahi-mahi. They are not the smartest, love shiny objects and are always ready to consume more.

Kind of like humans.

8. Diver

Think this is funny?

Except for the helmet, this was pretty close to my regular snorkeling outfit, while we lived aboard our boats.

I was terrified of being stung by something, while exploring the anchorage. Also, I was freezing after five minutes in the water.

9. Mermaid

Forplay Women’s Mermaid Skirt

I looked at a lot of mermaid costumes and this skirt is the closest to what real mermaids like.

Now, if you want to actually attract mermaids, you need to buy one of those and to swim like one too. So, naturally, you need to live on a boat and sail away.

Until then, the mermaid skirt will do. Don’t ask me what to put on top, haven’t you seen a mermaid before?

10. Shark

Adults Inflatable Halloween Costumes Blow Up Shark

This blow-up shark costume is a bit more friendly looking than actual sharks, but it is not expensive and deflates for easy storage.

Unlike mermaids, we have never tried to chase down sharks, but they are everywhere, just start cleaning your catch and you will believe me.

It is the safest way to be inside of a shark, that’s for sure.

11. Octopus

The fastest way to get out on the water, is to buy a boat and leave.

If you are not quite there yet, pick a few favorite YouTube channels of cruisers and liveaboards (hm, here is one) and get inspired.

The octopus costume will put you in the mood, as you snuggle on the couch. It might be the only costume, which you can also wear around the house.

12. Lobster

Funziez! Lobster Crustacean One Piece

These are your typical Maine lobster. The island lobsters have no claws and you do not need a trap to catch them.

But you need the claws for the party or Halloween effect.

I suppose one could also watch sailing YouTube videos in one of those, but the octopus looks more comfortable.

Halloween Aboard a Boat?

kids with lots of Halloween candy aboard a boat

We have celebrated a few Halloweens aboard. The kids usually make their costumes out of random materials, or we shop at the local thrift stores.

The best on-the-water Halloween, however, is when kids hop into the dinghy and tour the anchorage for treats from other boats – you can never beat that.

No matter what you choose to dress up as, keep it light and fun. As with every party, please drink responsibly and do not drink and drive.

If, on a boat – no texting and tacking either.

Answer to the blog quiz: Neptune is the Roman god of the sea, while Poseidon is the Greek one. The Greek one came first.
